The roadmap for the 2030 FIFA World Cup has been drawn. With a revamped format and a historic number of slots for our region, the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) has defined the stages, dates, and qualifying mechanisms.

Below, we break down point by point how the 6 direct tickets and the intercontinental playoff opportunity will be contested.

A Format of Evolution and Endurance

The qualifying process will be divided into three main rounds and a final Play-In phase, spanning from late 2027 to late 2029.

1. First Round: The Initial Filter (September - October 2027)

Teams ranked between 14th and 35th in the region's FIFA Ranking participate in this stage.

  •  Format: Direct elimination in home-and-away series (11 pairings).
  •  Competitors: 22 teams face off (highest-ranked vs. lowest-ranked, and so on).
  •  Goal: The 11 aggregate winners advance to the next phase.

Note: Teams in the Ranking's Top 13, such as Guatemala currently, are exempt from this round.

2. Second Round: Expanded Group Stage (November 2027 - March 2028)

This is where the bulk of the competition begins, as the region's powerhouses and the qualified teams from the previous phase join in.

  •    Participants: 24 national teams (13 pre-qualified by ranking + 11 from the first round).
  •      Structure: 6 groups of 4 teams each.
  •    System of Play: Round-robin in a home-and-away format.
  •    Qualification: The first and second-place finishers from each group (12 teams in total) secure their ticket to the Final Round.

3. Final Round: The Sprint for the Direct Ticket (June 2028 - October 2029)

Concacaf's elite battle for World Cup spots in the most demanding stage of the process.

  •  Participants: The top 12 teams from the previous round.
  •   Structure: 3 groups of 4 teams are drawn.
  •  System of Play: Double round-robin (home and away).
  •   Direct Prizes:
    •     The 3 group winners qualify directly for the World Cup.
    •    The 3 runners-up (second place) also secure a direct spot.

Total direct qualifiers: 6 national teams.

4. The Play-In: The Last Hope (November 2029)

For those teams that fall just short of glory, Concacaf has designed an internal playoff phase.

  •   Participants: The two best third-place finishers from the Final Round.
  •   Format: Direct elimination duel (Home and Away).
  •   The Prize: The aggregate winner of this series becomes the Concacaf representative in the FIFA Intercontinental Play-offs (Repechage against another confederation).

The Scenario for Guatemala

Based on the current ranking, the Guatemala National Team would start its participation directly in the Second Round. The big challenge for the "Azul y Blanco" will be to secure one of the top two spots in the initial group stage to break into the region's Top 12 and fight, in the Final Round, for one of the 6 slots that will lead us to fulfill the World Cup dream.
