The ecclesiastical history of Quetzaltenango could not be written without mentioning Monsignor Carlos Enrique Yarzebski Guerra, affectionately known by his community as "Padre Quique." With over half a century of priestly life, his figure stands as a symbol of faith, service, and human connection in the Guatemalan highlands.
Origins and Vocation
Born in the heart of Quetzaltenango on July 17, 1947, he was the son of Don Teodoro Yarzebski and Doña María Guerra. His journey to the altar formally began on January 11, 1975, with his diaconal ordination, and was consolidated a year later, on January 10, 1976, when he was ordained into the priesthood.
A Life in Service of the Parishes
Throughout five decades, Father Quique left his mark on several key locations across the department, characterized by a deep and steady pastoral ministry:
- Zunil: His first 5 years and 5 months of labor.
- El Calvario Parish: A transitional period of nearly two years.
- Quetzaltenango Metropolitan Cathedral: For 20 years, he led the Parish of the Holy Spirit (Espíritu Santo), becoming a cornerstone of the historic center.
- La Esperanza, Quetzaltenango: His longest tenure, dedicating 22 years to the Holy Cross Parish (La Santa Cruz), where he celebrated his golden jubilee of priesthood.
Milestones and Pontifical Honors
One of the highlights of his career occurred in 1983, when he took on the responsibility of organizing the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Quetzaltenango. Under his coordination, the solemn coronation of the image of the Virgin of the Rosary by His Holiness took place—an event that defined the Catholic identity of the region.
In 2014, his devotion was recognized globally when Pope Francis granted him the title of Chaplain of His Holiness, officially naming him Monsignor.
An Indelible Legacy
Monsignor Yarzebski passed away on February 19, 2026, but his impact remains. Beyond his titles, he is remembered as a priest who walked alongside his people—a tireless evangelizer and a spiritual pillar for multiple generations who found guidance and comfort in him.
