CAMTUR Wins the 2025 GREEN Tourism Excellence Award for its Climate Action Strategy for Tourism
Madrid, January 2026.Within the framework of the 2026 International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR), the Tourism Excellence Awards ceremony took place, where the Chamber of Tourism of Guatemala (CAMTUR) was honored with the Tourism Excellence Award, GREEN 2025 category, for its Climate Action Strategy for Tourism in Guatemala.
The award was received by Rolando Schweikert, President of CAMTUR, and Nancy Mejía, Executive Director. They were accompanied during the ceremony by Harris Whitbeck, Director General of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT); Patricia Orantes, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources; and Liwy Grazioso, Minister of Culture and Sports.
Also in attendance were Alicia Fajardo from The Travel Foundation; Jorge Cattaneo, General Director of the Ayuda en Acción Foundation; and Araceli Sanz, Mesoamerica Regional Director for Ayuda en Acción.
The Climate Action Strategy for Tourism in Guatemala earned first place from the judging panel, which was composed of prominent figures from the fields of tourism, art, and gastronomy from various countries. Through a secret and final voting process, they evaluated initiatives that promote innovative and sustainable approaches to tourism management. Additionally, the Strategy secured third place in the public vote, standing out among high-impact projects from various regions across the globe.
Regarding the achievement, Rolando Schweikert emphasized:
"The Climate Action Strategy for Tourism in Guatemala is an instrument that reflects the tourism sector's commitment to the sustainable development of the country. At the Chamber of Tourism of Guatemala, we have driven this process through a participatory approach, coordinating efforts between the public and private sectors, academia, communities, and international cooperation. This Strategy strengthens climate governance in tourism and lays the foundation for a more competitive, resilient model aligned with national and international climate change challenges."
Furthermore, Nancy Mejía noted:
"The Strategy is conceived as a living tool that guides decision-making and climate action for the sector across the country's diverse territories. Through strategic pillars focused on governance, climate change mitigation and adaptation, impact measurement, access to financing, and the regeneration of tourist destinations, it contributes to the strengthening and competitiveness of the sector."

(FITUR) 2026, se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de entrega de los Premios
Excelencias Turísticas, en la cual la Cámara de Turismo de Guatemala (CAMTUR)
fue galardonada con el Premio Excelencias Turísticas, categoría VERDE 2025, por
la Estrategia de Acción Climática para el Turismo en Guatemala. El
reconocimiento fue recibido por Rolando Schweikert, Presidente de CAMTUR y
Nancy Mejía, Directora Ejecutiva. Acompañaron a los directivos durante la
ceremonia Harris Whitbeck, Director General del Instituto Guatemalteco de
Turismo (INGUAT); Patricia Orantes, Ministra de Ambiente y Recursos Naturales;
y Liwy Grazioso, Ministra de Cultura y Deportes.
Durante el evento acompañaron Alicia
Fajardo, de The Travel Foundation; Jorge Cattaneo, director general de
la Fundación Ayuda en Acción; y Araceli Sanz, directora regional de Mesoamérica
de Ayuda en Acción.
La Estrategia de Acción Climática
para el Turismo en Guatemala obtuvo el primer lugar otorgado por el jurado
calificador, integrado por personalidades del turismo, el arte y la gastronomía
de distintos países, quienes, mediante un proceso de votación secreto e
inapelable, evaluaron iniciativas que promueven enfoques innovadores y
sostenibles en la gestión del turismo. Asimismo, la Estrategia alcanzó el
tercer lugar por votación del público, destacándose entre proyectos de alto
impacto provenientes de diversas regiones del mundo.
Al respecto, Rolando Schweikert destacó
que: “La Estrategia de Acción Climática para el Turismo en Guatemala es un
instrumento que refleja el compromiso del sector turístico con el desarrollo
sostenible del país. Desde la Cámara de Turismo de Guatemala impulsamos este
proceso de manera participativa, articulando esfuerzos del sector público y
privado, la academia, las comunidades y la cooperación internacional. Esta
Estrategia fortalece la gobernanza climática del turismo y sienta las bases
para un modelo más competitivo, resiliente y alineado con los desafíos del
cambio climático a nivel nacional e internacional.”
Por su parte, Nancy Mejía señaló que: “La
Estrategia se concibe como una herramienta viva que orienta la toma de
decisiones y la acción climática del sector en los distintos territorios del
país. A través de ejes estratégicos enfocados en la gobernanza, la mitigación y
adaptación al cambio climático, la medición de impactos, el acceso a
financiamiento y la regeneración de destinos turísticos, contribuye al
fortalecimiento del sector y a su competitividad.”
Con este reconocimiento, Guatemala
fortalece su visibilidad internacional y reafirma el compromiso del sector
turístico organizado con un modelo de desarrollo que protege su riqueza
natural, se adapta al cambio climático y construye un futuro sostenible para
sus destinos y comunidades.

Pope Leo XIV Authorizes Beatification of Guatemalan Martyr Friar Augusto Rafael Ramírez Monasterio
VATICAN CITY – During an audience on January 22 with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Pope Leo XIV authorized the promulgation of several decrees of high significance for the global Catholic community. Most notably, the Holy Father recognized the martyrdom of Friar Augusto Rafael Ramírez Monasterio, OFM, clearing the way for his beatification.
A Life Dedicated to the Poor and the Gospel
Born in Guatemala City in 1937, Friar Augusto Rafael’s path of service led him through Nicaragua and Spain before returning to Guatemala in 1978. As the guardian and pastor of San Francisco el Grande in Antigua Guatemala, he became a pillar of support for the poor and defenseless during the height of the country’s civil war.
Despite the systematic persecution of the Church by military forces at the time, Friar Augusto remained steadfast. His commitment to social justice and his unwavering protection of the Seal of Confession—even under threat of death—made him a target for those who viewed the Church's pastoral work as a threat.
Witness of Faith
In June 1983, Friar Augusto was detained and tortured for providing aid to a peasant seeking amnesty. Despite constant surveillance and death threats, he refused to abandon his ministry. On November 7, 1983, he was captured and killed by military forces. The Vatican has officially recognized that his sacrifice was a result of "hatred of the faith," formalizing his status as a martyr.

Un legado de fe y valentía
Nacido en la Ciudad de Guatemala en 1937, Fray Augusto Rafael dedicó su vida al servicio pastoral y a la defensa de los más vulnerables. Tras formarse en Nicaragua y España, regresó a su tierra natal en 1978 para desempeñarse como guardián y párroco de San Francisco el Grande en Antigua Guatemala.
Su labor se desarrolló en uno de los periodos más convulsos de la historia guatemalteca. En medio de un conflicto civil y una persecución sistemática contra la Iglesia, Fray Augusto se mantuvo firme en su compromiso evangélico. En 1983, tras asistir a un campesino que buscaba amnistía y proteger el secreto de confesión ante las presiones militares, el religioso sufrió detenciones y torturas.
Martirio por "Odio a la Fe"
El 7 de noviembre de 1983, Fray Augusto fue capturado y asesinado por fuerzas militares tras un intento de escape durante su traslado. La Santa Sede ha reconocido formalmente su martirio, con las investigaciones indicando que fue por "odio a la fe", elevándolo a los altares, como beato, como un ejemplo de fidelidad extrema a los valores del Evangelio y a la justicia social.
