Excellent news has emerged! The digital media outlet Mi Xelaju Fan, through the Región Más channel, reported that the board of directors of the "superchivo" team recently finalized negotiations with an airline for a charter flight directly from Quetzaltenango to the cities in Honduras and El Salvador where their away matches in the Copa Centroamericana tournament will be played. The "lanudo" team qualified for this competition after being crowned champions of the Apertura 2024 tournament.
This is a significant logistical step for the "superchivo" team, as it will reduce waiting times, meaning players won't arrive tired at the hotel concentration and can potentially improve their athletic performance in the matches.
While this alone isn't a decisive factor, it's an important one for the players' morale and physical conditioning. Previously, they had to travel by bus to the capital, a journey that could easily take at least four hours, considering national road conditions. In optimal conditions, it shouldn't take as long. That, combined with airport waiting times, added more time to the journey.
With this new arrangement, the "superchivo" team is expected to drastically reduce travel time. Just imagine knowing the exact departure time of the already scheduled flight. You could arrive at a specific hour without wasting time, wait 20 minutes to half an hour at most, and then travel directly to the Central American city.
All of this brings many advantages to the "altense" team. Many will think about the cost, but let's be honest, if you want to get results, you have to invest even in things that might not seem that important but actually are. That's why we congratulate the board of directors and hope the team can take advantage of this on the field. The question will be whether the Mario Camposeco stadium will get the green light from Concacaf, not so much for the stadium itself, which has received multimillion-dollar improvements in various areas, especially the new LED lights for better visibility, crucial for international broadcasters transmitting the matches, but more so because of the airport, which is not 100% international in practice.
We hope that the Mario Camposeco stadium can be approved for international competitions, not just for the Copa Centroamericana, but also for a hypothetical venue for World Cup qualifiers, where the altitude of over 2,300 meters above sea level in Quetzaltenango can work in favor of the Guatemalan national team against the more than probable Caribbean teams that might come to play crucial away matches on the road to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
